DeSantis Restricts FL Children From Social Media Usage

I bet this subject goes over like a fart in church at the family dinner table. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill restricting children from making social media accounts. The first thing that came to mind was how he would enforce his new law. We were all kids once and always figured a way around such restrictions. Being an only child born in the early 50’s and never having children I know of, I’m sure DeSantis will be fading some severe heat over his new law.

WUSF Reports: Florida’s new social media ban for minors is among the toughest in the nation! “You better believe I’ll fight like hell to uphold this in court,” said Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody during the bill signing ceremony at a Jacksonville charter school. Moody warned that social media encourages child predation and that some children, especially young ones, don’t realize they’re being manipulated and can end up in dangerous situations.

The law’s main proponent is Speaker Renner. He prioritized the issue during the legislative session, and the measure was passed with bipartisan support. Renner’s plan targets social media companies like Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok, which use what he describes as manipulative algorithms that are “leading them [children] and nudging them into a particular direction. And often, when they’re suffering mental health issues, that’s nudging them into a very, very dark direction.”

Under the bill, social media accounts for kids under 14 would be completely banned and companies would have to terminate such accounts. Kids between 14 and 15 could have accounts only with parental or guardian consent. Anyone over 16 is free to be on social media. Click the above link to read more!
